I'm an unhappy customer as I tried to get a hold of someone in their office and all the phone numbers I have do not work. I don't even know if they exist. We purchase our windows from them in 2003 and they were suppose to sent someone to help me take the storm windows off to clean. I still don't know how to take them off. I had the front living room completely replaced, but the rest of the house they installed storm windows and they were suppose to work the same way as the one on the front and not create mold in between both windows, well that is just no true as I found out and recently my handle on the front screen door broke and I've been trying to get a hold of them and I have not had any luck. If anyone out there knows how to get a hold of them please let me know.

I was between a rock and a hard place. I really wanted to get going on a sales career. I'd spent several years as a jeweler, but the influx of Vietnamese into the Seattle area priced my profession below my needed income.

I interviewed with the Pacesetter Corporation and they sounded pretty good. THey dressed well wore nice shoes, and seemed to be on the up and up.

But for some reason the Seattle Sales office wasn't moving enough product.

We'd been throguh all the classes about T6061 Aircraft Aluminum sxtrusion, thermally bvroken float glass self cleaning (there was no such thing) how the screendoor handles were made to "Break Off" in the event of a forced entry...

I closed a couple of absurdly overpriced screen doors, and all the exterior doors with my "senior sales associate" - a guy who'd just transfered up from Portland.

Well he was so excited about having sold anything in Seattle that we had to go have a beer in Orting.

This schmuck hooked up with a barfly, and drove off into the night leaving me nicely dressed jacket tie, Florscheim shoes in the cow town of Orting 31 miles from home.

About a month later, "Senior" management came to town to see why sales were not going well.

He reviewed our pitches, told us to strike anything about screen door security, because they weren't true. No T6061 aircraft aluminum, not true.

A week later, Pacesetter pulled out of the Seattle Region with no prior notice to any of the sales reps. We literally showed up to work to find the doors locked.

There's a lot more to say about these low life scum sucking people, but I've got to get back to work.

After being gone for a little bit now I like to see what intersting things people come up with since my new job hasn't yet started. But recently before I left the company (myco), a black man who was the only one there at the time, approached me and another girl in the call center and told us how he was passed up for promotions. It was very funny considering he was the worst employee there and that he was written up numerous times because he never came to work - and when he did was never on time. Not to mention he never got any real leads only fakes (trust me I called his leads). And the Mr. K. you speak so badly of is the only reason 'this guy' wasn't fired way sooner. And the girl was really nice to me. But more so she was the best worker, She did the best job, always on time, made the most money for the company, etc. and a man who never even worked and flipped out on me & the other girls by swearing, etc. was passed up? I think you're going after the wrong people here because we all know who the real bad guys are.

We have had our windows for 13 years. The only reason we have had them that long is because we cannot afford to replace them. The price we paid for them was highway robbery! But at the time, doing monthly payments (with their company) was the only way we could do it. The windows now are a joke! They DON"T seal for one thing. They LEAK water and air-all 4 seasons. We have SO much ICE build on them in the winter months(Minnesota)that we litterly have a flood in the spring. My woodwork is ruined. The pipe cleaner (so called insulation strip) is smashed so bad that they either fall out on its own or is half way in or out stuck. I would NEVER recommend these windows to anybody!!!!!!!

In 2003,I, too, was telemarketed about replacement windows. Unfortunately, after falling for the sales rep's convincing pitch, I signed up for two sliders, a large picture window, and two smaller ones, all to the tune of over $7,000. Initially, the price was about $1000 less, but a few days later, the rep returned saying she had mistakenly figured in the price for smaller windows, so the price had to be amended----a red flag that should have stopped me dead in my tracks, but it didn't. I guess I was dazzled by all that argon gas.

I live about 60 miles away, but my contract was with Pacesetter's Fresno office, and as I recall now, the installation was done in a timely manner. However, one of the sliders had some serious scratches along the inside frame. I don't remember if I noticed them, or if the installer did, but he put in the door anyway and said he would make sure a new door was ordered and someone would call me about a new date for the re-installation. I do remember that several weeks passed and I had heard from no one. It took several phone calls by me and a few more weeks before someone finally arrived and put in the new door.

Coincidentally, in the meantime, I noticed a small cloud of condensation in the lower right corner of the large window. I pointed it out to the second installer and he said to call the company, as he could do nothing, which I understood----I just wanted someone connected with the company to see it. I should have called immediately, but admittedly, I didn't. After a few days, the cloud had disappeared and even three and a half years later, it has not reappeared. I did not pursue reporting the problem, which in hindsight, was a mistake, as now the window appears cloudy overall. I have since talked to someone who worked for Fresno's Pacesetter and was a victim of the company when they went bankrupt. He told me there is likely a break in the seal. Great!

There's more. Just yesterday, I realized that one of the smaller windows would not lock. The window is also loose in the track and will not stay up when raised. I had not had occasion to open this window before now, so this is the first time I realized the problem. After examining the window, my husband and I noticed that the lower window does not fit correctly so the latch does not line up with the upper window. For the last three and a half years, I've had a window that isn't locking even though the latches are in the locked position----and I didn't know it!! It creeps me out that there is an easy access into my home and Pacesetter is not available to fix the problem. I was made to believe that Pacesetter makes a top of the line safe, clear, insallating window. But when all is said and done, all my seven thousand dollars bought is a cloudy view and an open invitation to burglars!

I can hardly wait until the remaining window and the two sliders join the party!

Of course, now when I call the Fresno number, the phone rings and rings without answer. Who's paying the bill???
When I call Pacesetter's corporate headquarters, I'm greeted with a busy signal. Must be all those "satisfied" customers like me calling with their praises.

Out of desperation, I put in a call today to another number that I found in my notes, and, luckily, the man I mentioned above kindly returned my call. Without his return call, I would not know that Pacesetter is out of business and bankrupt. He had bad news, but I can't thank him enough for answering me back; he certainly didn't have to.

So, so much for that chatty sales rep's assurances about how Pacesetter is----was??--- a solid company in business for many years and the producer of a trustworthy product. I mean, that demonstration with the heat lamp sure made its impression! Neither the Valley's summer sun nor winter freezes would pierce that argon layer. I was sold!

I must admit, I broke two of my personal rules in signing up with Pacesetter: When it comes to home improvements, deal only with local businesses and don't put all your eggs in one sales pitch. Oh, and I've added another rule: Hang up on telemarketers. Once burned, twice learned.

American Home Craft or ahcionline.com is filled with ex Pacesetter TM managers. They use the same Pacesetter phone pitch, rebuttals, bridges etc. The same 10 step hard sell sales rep tactics. The sales rep turnover rate is as high as pacesetters. All but one installer is a subcontractor. They were the 1st company to ever be sued under the Do Not Call act. What ever you do dont enter their contest because they only do 3 of the 10 things they claim you can win. When you tell them to put you on their DNC list they will just hit you up again through the mail. When TMs get complaints from customers, TMs get high 5s from Managers just like @ Pacesetter. When you are making millions an $80.000 fine is probably no big deal!

Man where do I start. As an X employee from Houston 2003, Pacesetter has the worst buisness practices I've ever seen. The salesmen and telemarketers are trained specifically to be sneaky, forcefull and dishonest. I've seen this from the inside.

(1) First and foremost, there is no warranty on Pacesetter products ever period. There's a piece of paper that says there is but Pacesetter will never warranty thier work, period.

As trainees we learned very quickly that "we" were the warranty reps who were actually supposed to up sell them on something else. Wow.

Everytime the customer would be so frustrated because we were the 3rd or 4th salesman to come out when really they wanted a screw replaced. My manager couldn't even get one of his faulty storm door warranty repairs for a customer so his regional manager told him to just go do it himself. Keep in mind the door was twice as much as a Sears door which they would have warrantied locally.

The turn around for managers and salesman is about a month. Each time the trainees are handed "leads" which are actually warranty calls. There's no one ever left over from the previous training class to warn them.

(2) Pacesetter Telemarketing rules the company. If a salesmen and telemarketer have a problem with each other, the salesman is always the first to get fired.

Telemarketing gets $25 everytime a salesman gets in the front door so that's all they care about. They're going to be very persistent with "A saleman's in the area" pitch when in reality we could be 1.5 hrs away. These people could be in a brand new house and saying no or just lonely and telemarketing always makes it seem like this is the one, 'cause they'll make $25 while the salesman spends the gas $ to go there.

I drove an hour to a house that had brand new siding and everything. I was sitting at the table with the lady trying to see what she needed. She told me everything is brand new and the telemarketer would not take no for an answer so she just said OK. Wow

You have to call and check in with telemarketing after every visit. I told them it was a no go. Well that's not an option on thier form. He asked me if I offered to buy back to entire cost of everything they had done to thier house so we could over charge them for Pacesetter stuff. Speechless literally. 3 hours wasted while he made $25.

(3) The salesman is supposed to do a 45 minute warm up so the customer is more easily taken. I don't have that much B.S.

(4) A veteran Pacesetter manger came in from San Antonio one day to train. He told us to include the tax in the first set of #s. If you buy today, 10% off and we'll back out the tax. There's no tax on out of state goods. That's illegal. Again upper management training us to be crooks. No one in the class used this tactic in the field.

(5) My first sales call with my manager was to a trailer home 2 hours away that should have been condemned. It was falling apart with gaps every where. It was a tear down. I didn't even want to sit down. I was gathering everything so we could leave and my manager blows into the whole 2 hour sales process. I thought I gotta see this. He had them signing a contract for $4000 worth of double pane windows on a tear down. Four days later we found out they wouldn't be approved but Pacesetter tried hard. The family would have defaulted and Pacesetter would have put a lien on the trailer.

(6) Pacesetter preys on the elderly, veterans, invalids and the poor uneducated. I'm not just being mean, I've seen it first hand. Telemarketing actually prefers those kind of people.
I've gone to the vets houses that are unpainted 2 room shacks. Vet says I told them I live on $750 a month but they wouldn't take no for an answer.
The sadest was a diabetic who had lost his legs and Pacesetter had thier products all around this guys home. Very sad.

(7) No one in the training class could get a sale to stick! Not one single one! There were a few people who had a legitimate need so we tried to sign them up but everytime the next day the person would be in our office 8:00 am sharp flanked by every family member they could round up to recind on the contract.

(8) After everything I put up with, all the $ I spent in gas and wear and tear on the car Pacesetter marks my Credit report so they can get back the draw money they gave me. Everyone one gets hurt in the wake of Pacesetters buisness practices.

(9) I wonder to this day how they got way with it. Have they been doing this for 40 years or did it just start with some bad apples in the mid 90's.

(10) How come ABC didn't do an undercover story on them?

I would like to help in any way to help people from getting scammed from any of thier spin off Companies.

Great job in getting them shut down. The world's is a better place with out them.

I was viewing the website today just checking for any updates and seeing Mr. Iskra's name and all the discussions about how he and his minions are trying to start over with mycontractor.com...anyhow, during my research last year - when I filed the Attorney General Complaint, I located this bit of information:

It should also be said that when I first purchased my siding I was talking to my former boss - who had worked for a major financial institution for 30 years before being laid off in 2003. When I mentioned Mr. Iskra's name in conjunction with my initial complaint letters to Pacesetters, my boss replied (and I quote) - "Holy Shit - Tell me you didn't purchased something from a company run by Gary Iskra!? He was part of the Sears/Koolvent debacle that (major financial institution) provided financing for! We (the financial institution) almost lost our shirts over the whole thing."

You should also know that the AG was absolutely no help. They recommended I get an attorney which kills me because I am on disability and really can't afford an attorney. Why do these government agencies exist??!!! Here you have evidence of someone (or a group of people) consistently using deceptive practices to sell home improvements, then committing breach of contract! Then filing bankruptcy to protect themselves!!!

So I contact WTAE (local ABC affiliate) Consumer Investigator and had a return phone call recommending I contact the governor's hotline. Still have to do that. Will report afterward.

Not only did Pacesetter make the windows and storm doors but they also manufactured the cabinet doors (refacing), in addition to that they also owned the bank (FDS). I know because I also toured the plant and the bank....It was a good company to work for when in the hands of the Schragers, and yes there were some scumbags in telemarketing but just as many in sales, admin and installation; just like there is in any other sales company, and just as many or more decent, hard working people. Only the cream rose to the top at Pacesetter and if you lasted more than a year you know you could make it anywhere, it wasn't perfect but they tried to make the customer happy (Schrager era)when Iskra took over it took a turn ....and that is when this website was created. Many of you that read and or write here are successful in your present endeavors, I know I am, and I thank Pacesetter for that....The power of positive thinking is a force so great that has enabled ordinary people to achieve..........

Pacesetter made their own windows. I have been to their factory, which had Phil Schrager's and his associates offices in the same building.

Who's home during normal work hours? Retired people, unemployed, sick, disabled and Tweekers (of course their windows will be covered to keep out the sunlight).

Who's got the money? Older people, who are home during work hours and can't do their own work. Of course the prices included the installation as well.

There are products that may look the same, but are not. I have never seen a window constructed like the ones that I sold and saw being made in Omaha. We are talking built like a tank.

The prices were high for a reason. People were not made an "offer they couldn't refuse", like in the Godfather. We are talking freedom of choice here and what you call lieing is simply salesmanship. We all have to eat and pay bills. If we wanted to just scrape by, we could have taught 3rd grade and had lots of vacation time and other days off, but the successful saleman were good because they knew how to overcome objections and make a trusting friend.

Phil and Harley knew what all the objections would be, so those were overcome in advance as a 10 step presentation, which it appears you were 1-5-9ing by your description. You probably weren't any good and are bitter at Pacesetter for your failure.

We all have fun making comments on this sight because of the protection of anonimity and I too have had to resort to aliases. My problem has always been with some of but not all of the personnel. I had a good relationship with Gary Kluck and Buda, but the Sales Managers were another story and the Telemarketing Department had some that I would have liked to have met in a dark alley, but all this aside, Pacesetter did make a great product and sure they did have some products that were made by vendors, but the windows were the best I have ever seen - bar none.

You add that you are a credable observer because you own your own business. That's fine, but that doesn't make you an expert. Just because you walk into a barn - doesn't make you into a cow either. When you are pulling in $140,000,000/ year, then come back and talk about how crappy the products were at your former employer - Pacesetter.

Hello, I stumbled across this web site and new I had to respond. I too worked for Pacesetter for a short time. I worked there as a salesman in 1990 and part of 1991. When I first worked ther I thought it was a nice professional work place. The following months revealed anything but the latter. I was previously for many years in the building industry as a builder so I was able to read between the lines. As I viewed certain aspects of pacesetter's business aspects I new it was a scam from start to finish. The company lied to me and in turn believing what they said caused me to lie to customers.

The lies
The sales pitch to customers that was taught to me in a two week training.

Step one: Entry into a house.
If customer would not let you in you were supposed to ask for water,bathroom, etc..NOTE(These were supposed to be all customers who set legitamite appointments) We were told never to take no for an answer

Step two: Warm up (qualify)
We were to sit for fifteen minutes and qualify the customers. How long they owned there home, their credit etc.. The reason was because, Pacesetter, we were told owned there own bank-Federal Diversified services. I later found out this was not entirely true. We were also told that each appointment we went to was already pre-qualified and pre approved for financing. We were never told that they would attach their home because of the financing. In fact we were told to tell cestomers in the next step that our financing was soled based on personal credit and that we were different than other companies who liened homes. Of course this is not true.

Step three: The company
We were given a sales pitch in which we were told to tell customers that we as a company owned everything. We owned our own bank, we owned our own trucks, and we ourselves, manufactured our own products: Windows, siding, etc. This of course was an extreme lie. One company manufactured the windows for pacesetter and another manufactured the siding. In fact the siding was manufactured by aluminum indristries and sold to pacesetter. I was also told to tell the customers that we as a company had and trained our own installers. We used no sub contractors. We were told that paceseter required 9 monthes of in depth training and testing of our installers. the reason for all of this was that pacesetter eliminated the middle man and therefore saved the customer a tremendous amount of money. This of course was absolutly false and a terreble lie. Their prices were priced absolutly high. In fact way over the norm in the industry. In short pacesetter was a conn. They conned every body from employes to their customers.

I worked in the Portland, Oregon office. I have never viewed such sleazy conduct in my life as I had when working at pacesetter. In fact their main target of customers were the elderly. The covered this by having a company policy that said we could not sell to anyone over 75 years of age. They said we cannot take advantage of the elderly. But in fact this was a smoke screen because proably 90 percent of the customers I was sent to see were 65 years or older. I wonder now how many elderly people pacesetter screwed through the attachments on their homes. It makes me sick that I was a part of that company.

I could go on and on about other unethecal practices that I witnessed at pacesetter but I won't I feel that every one gets the point.

I now operate my own construction company. I from time to time get a customer whom pacesetter delt with by selling them a wall of siding or one to a few windows. These were called partial sales. Most I have delt with have never herd from pacesetter again and are stuck with a partial job that was never finished. Usually when I am finished pricing out the entire job the people are astonished as to the comparison prices. I almost always can finish up three walls of siding or six to ten windows and be cheaper that the one wall of siding or the two windows that pacesetter had originally sold them. I do the job and I educate the people about pacesetter. I am very glad I stumbled upon this site. Hopefully I can help educate others so they will not be taken advantage of again by pacesetter or any other telemarketing home improvement company.

Do you realize how much money you were making for doing absolutely nothing? "Just let the rep come in for a drink of water - ok" "He/She will only be there for 15 minutes". It takes you a couple of minutes to get to that point @ $7.00/hour and you make $15.00 if the rep sells, so you are in effect making: $450.00/hour for your 2 minute conversation. The Rep is working from 8am at chec-in until past 8pm every weekday and putting on 1000 miles a week on their car and spending a minimum of 3.5 hours in the house giving a demo, with NO pay if they don't sell.! What was their incintive to NOT sell? And they would work sometimes till midnight and beyound. And and then when they got back to their motel room, they had to fax in all their paperwork or round up a mobile notary. Give me a break TMer! You were doing WHAT you could do and if you weren't satified with that, then you should have tried selling - but oh - that's real work! The first time I ventured into the Sacramento Telemarket office to be introduced to those creeps, I thought I was in the Star Wars Canteen with all those strange creatures and I too observed dealing and usage outside in the parking lot when they were supposedly "working" their sales counterparts for a lead. Hell, someone got blown away right in the parking lot. Probably a bad deal or territory infringement enforcement. "Sleezy" is the only term I can think about to discribe them. How about all those 15 minute visits they promised the customers and all the drinks of water for the sales staff that the customers were just going to have to give. How about all the phony directions at quiting time to say they got a lead to pad their stats. I also learned an awful lot about sales, sales management, techniques, closing tactics, perseverance, reading people and other important skills that are helping me today. I am the Sales Director for a family owned business and I looked like a hero by simply applying some of the "good stuff" I learned while working for Pacesetter. However, I am home each evening, except when I travel, which is a part of the job, but it is "real" travel, company credit card, expense accounts, rental cars, nice hotels and the owner is a sports fan and I reap the benefit's of such. The last three years alone I have seen the Chicago Bears twice, the Denver Broncos twice, USC Vs. UCLA, a Cub game, White Sox, and lots of Angels and Dodgers.

I do not miss the schedule, but even when I was Sales Manager, I made the time to see my son play ball, and if Buda gave me any flack, I would just laugh and go any way!

I did receive a nice check from that settlement for expenses, and to this day I am surprised that Pacesetter did not file BK before they were forced to pony up all that cash. "Oh well" it really was our money, right?

After reading the last comment, I can see that there were others that became aware of the unethical practices of Pacesetter. Some people like to sleep good at night. I too escaped before the callapse and I too got paid later and also got an unspecified figure for unpaid car mileage due to a class action suit. Shortly after that - Pacesetter disappeared off the face of the map.

I too liked Gary Kluck and Buda. We went on a houseboad ride on Shasta once. I still like them personally. The problem that I have with them is strickly business and not personal. I went through Flight School and took a trip to the Bahamas. Due to the training and experience that I got at Pacesetter, I feel it gave me a great foundation to apply those skills at wherever I may work in the sales industry. I am a publisher of a magazine right now and also have control over the sales aspect. I truely feel that I wouldn't be here right now without the training I received at Pacesetter. I learned what works for me and what not to do. The one thing that I never liked at Pacesetter was the Telemarketing dept. Most telemarketers didn't like me, because I would qualify leads. I still set office records while I was there and the manager clones that they kept sending there didn't like me either, because I would tell them what I thought. I didn't care what happened to me, because I was all ready giving them an arm and a leg, so if I got fired, it would have been a mercy killing. Well I never got fired, but walked away 2 separate times and landed on my feet both times. Can't say the same thing about Pacesetter. May they rest in peace!

I hired on with Pacesetter in Corona Ca 1994 as a sales rep. The appeal of "pre-screened" qualified leads and the income potential described in the ad in the local paper prompted me to apply. I met with Tom Budiselic, "Buda", and he did a good job of impressing me with the scope and success of the company and most importantly the opportunites awaiting me there. The office had not yet officially opened and I was in the first "class" of sales reps.

I took the job very seriously as I had a financial nut to crack and did not want to go back into restaurant mamagement. Sales was going to be my future.

I learned and applied what I learned right out of the gate. Even though I had started long after the yearly "contest" had started but sold enough in three months to earn a trip "Presidents Club Trip" to Phoenix AZ. I was actually quite happy with the decisions I had made to go to work for them.

I was offerd a promotion to Assistant SM under a man who had come down from Fresno with Buda to open the office. I was the first in in the morning, doing all the adminstrative stuff, setting the tone for the day, and long story short, eventually became sales manager, went through "Flight School", and thought I had found my calling. I was working very long hours but it was in a professional atmosphere and I seemed to be ebing appreciated.

Buda had been a "GM" and I had only heard of Gary Kluck who was the "GM" in Northern Ca. We really did not see or inter-act with them very much. A "Reorganization" took place and suddenly we were part of the Sac Profit Center. Kluck was impressive at first, driven, likeable, dedicated and seemingly fair-minded. But, it turns out, he seemed that way to me because my office was performing and I was as smart as he was. He never tried any BS on me, not until I began to see for myself the tactics and behind the scenes manipulations did I begin to realize what this little "empire" was built on.

I left in Dec. 2000, when I realized that what was going on was unsustainable. Rumors of law-suits, deficit spending, illegal bsuiness practices relating to CA employee law and other signs led me to "escape" unscathed, (I actually received a check a few months later for unpaid commisions!).

I had 11ea Storm Windows and a front Storm Door installed in Feb 97 and have had a fair experiance with the Pacesetter Corp. They have changed out two of my window screens, a front storm door handle and Hydrolic closure at no cost to me.(under Warrenty)

The only problem I've had was difficulty in removing the windows out of their tracks so that they can be cleaned, by not leaving enough space between my existing windows and the ones they installed.

My contract is getting close to expire and would like them to come service them while still under warrenty, but I here the have went UNDER and no longer exist.

Am I the only one who had a fairly good experiance..I had 5 windows and a patio door installed, and with the exception of the were high priced, they are great windows so far. i have hads them in for 3 years, and was trying to locate them to buy one more big bay window, when I found out they arent even in business. I would just love to find my same installer to do this next window..I myself, stood and watched him, and he did a great job..I think the windows are a pretty good product, and like anything else, they are as good as the installation. Are they high priced..when you add the financing, yes they are..but my credit is my problem, and I accept that..since I had them installed, my credit situation has improved, and my loan to Pacesetter will be paid later this week....Now, i just wish I could find my old installer

this how rainsoft does things, you buy a dealership and get authorized to distribute rainsoft water treatment systems. the thing is since you are the private owner of a dealership you take all the loss while the factory still makes money. My Contractor. com is the same way, they act as a supplier to these little offices that used to be pacesetter offices I.E. = quality first home improvements of sacramento, Best value home improvements in grand rapids, MI think of how many campanies that became of the pacesetter offices
if there was 64 i gaurantee there are at least 50 offices with just the superstars left.

Some game. the problems is ISKRA and especially KREMPASKY sucks so bad at managing marketing he had to put himself in a win win situation. Get your own leads but we will give you some. The same way rainsoft is. lol

the only thing is they couldnt do that with the rainsoft dealership that they owned because they dont know how to manage. GO FIGURE

He had moved to Omaha and obtained a job with pacesetter. He worked for pacesetter at the time when I first met him. We were engaged for a while and then broke it off....now that I have read through this site, I completely understand what stress he has went through. I admit I did not understand the stress at the time. I did not understand why he would go to a lead and be gone for hours and hours and hours. I thought...What the hell is he doing? He spent alot of time away and I began to think that was his choice. He would drive everywhere. Drive to these tiny towns and spend hours in some strangers home to sell everything and anything. After hours and hours if he was turned down he would be yelled at the next day why he didnt close the sale. What did they think??? He did it for the fun of it? He would tell me about some of the leads he would get and some of the scary and slum houses he would visit. Some home owners were not even serious about buying anything from him. They just ran him in circles. I could tell he was stressed and started to fall into depression. When I say into depression I mean "the bottle". I would help clean out his car after returning home from being gone a week. I would find sandwhich wrappers from 7-11 that was his dinner, coffee cups, flooring/siding samples, little pieces of paper with people's addresses and phone numbers for leads, camera, photos of houses, and then there it was....."the bottle of Bacardi"....There were times he would come home and when he sweat he would either sweat coffee or Bacardi. I would come into the Headquarter building with him to talk to his boss and see this room with a chalkboard/classroom..and wonder "What are they training?" It seemed odd. I did not trust his coworkers...they did not seem genuine. Dont get me wrong it was not all bad. The incentive reward trip to the Bahamas and Florida were lovely. It was like the company was telling all the wives, girlfriends, and daughters...."If you put up with Pacesetter and not nag we will send you on a trip and give ya a gift.

I can honestly say that Mycontractor.com AKA Myco is as the site says. Sadly enough they are very good at "diverting" negativity. I once believed that Myco was an honest company. I planned for my future with them...including my retirement. I would like to give a warning to all home owners...whether you are considering work or have worked with them. Call the CA CSLB, they have a toll free number. Give them the license number that you were given by your rep, and ask if they can perform the work legally. Also check www.cslb.ca.gov and see if your rep is licensed. If you signed a contract, see if your rep was licensed at the time you signed the contract. It's free and it's easy. If they are or were not licensed...report them! If you signed a contract for work that they were not licensed to perform, report them! It is as easy as a phone call to the CSLB swift team. There are plenty of people who allowed illegal reps to enter their home, if they check it out and match the dates...quite a few have finally been licensed but compare the date with your contract.Why is this important? Because if they were not licensed, you invited someone into your home, exposed them to your family...and they did NOT have a background check. Check your local court records for their criminal history it is public record. Protect your home and your family do NOT allow this to go on. If it has happened to you and you did sign a contract REPORT IT! If you got an estimate from an unlicensed rep...report it! Also did you know it is illegal in CA for contractors to offer incentives for referrals? If you have been offered this..report it..this is shady business! This isnt only for those who have associated with MYCO..it's for anyone who is thinking of working with any contractor...you may find that the rep you are thinking of inviting into your home or already invited into your home has been arrested for under the influence, felony fraud, child molestation, and violence related crimes. Check out the reps you have had or considered having in your home...then you decide if you can trust the source.And please post your results somewhere...inform the public of this danger protect your family and others. Dont allow contractors of any kind get away with this...being uninformed can be dangerous. Every year thousands of elderly and families are victimized because they did not know the laws..and it is easily available. If your contractor has broke even the smallest of laws be assured..it is probly not the only one...crime and fraud isn't picky choosy.If a friend or family member has had work done or is considering to...pass this info on! I worked for Pacesetter about 20 yrs agao. I quit after six months. I could not take it. It was all a series of unethical tactics leading to signing a contract for stuff that is not worth third the price.
1. The telemarketer never told the prospective buyer about the length of the pitch. It was usually 3 hrs.
- The Telemarketers claimed that it was just a visit to show the window or other products
- The sales pitch consisted of ten consecutive steps. The first one was called "the warm up". This is when the Rep walk tries to break the ice. It could be five to twenty minutes or more. This was an important step to create trust.
- The rest of the steps followed. Pricing was done before closing. Closing always included a lot of lies
- Prospective buyers could bargain and the Rep had up to 30% to discount. The Rep commission varied from 3 to 30% depending on the amount discounted. Most Reps fudged the numbers.
- The quality was overstated. The warranty was exagerated. the products were extremely overpriced
- The sales manager at the office and in the area got some commission on every sales made by every Rep. the telemarketer who made the winning call and his/her manager got some commission too.
You can imagine how much commission was paid at the end
There were a lot of lies about everything from Materials to Manufacturing to installation..you name it. It was a big lie
I do not want to remember those times. It was awful. I quit after six months. It was not worth it
wAHT WAS ALWAYS SURPRISING IS HOW PEOPLE GOT CHEATED SO EASILY AND HOW THEY WERE WILLING TO PAY 3000 DOLLARS FOR A GARAGE DOOR WHEN HOME DEPOT SELLS THEM FOR 400 DOLLARS OR HOW THEY WERE WILLING TO PAY 800 DOLLARS FOR A WINDOW WHEN HOME DPEOT SELLS IT FOR 150 DOLLARS.

25 years ago the phone sales industry was very different. As a communicator, we used every tactic at our disposal to intrigue a potential customer to let our closer into the door. September, 1982 I was the top communicator for Pacesetter nationwide and was the subject of "victor" nominations due to my immediate rise to the top of the sales categories upon my hiring. Pacesetter was a family at that time. At convention, I had a very open and hilarious conversation with Phil (whom I had never met previously) and enjoyed the spirit of the intent of his vision.
I graduated college with a degree in architecture and am currently employed as a historical restoration associate with a firm that works within the Daley administration. I will never forget those who I worked with and their desire to provide a quality product, yet pursue big sale numbers. Guys like Bill Fisherkeller who taught me how to follow a pitch and adjust based upon the customers response (my very best teacher and friend) and those who shared how every aspect of our association is responsible to each other because we will eventually be judged based upon the completion of our project.
Pacesetter helped define me as a construction manager and I would still work for Harley or Phil if the asked.....

This is a familiar story stated several times since this site came online. Try this one out: The day after 911, Pacesetter was upset that sales were down so much over the whole corporation. The trainer at the semenar said " what's the matter with these sales people - they still have to pay their bills and put their kids thru college"! Logic has it, if Pacestter can't feel for the thousands who lost their lives while just sitting at their desk, how would they feel bad about overselling to potential customers? I was stunned and my whole attitude turned after that. Fact is, Pacesetter was a revenue based corporation and if they weren't selling windows, it would be any product that they could get trusting people to purchase. They felt that home improvement sales were a virtual gold mine. After all, it was all about trust - wasn't it! Remember in your sales training the purpose of Warm-up? You were told that if they liked you, they would buy from you. Remember? My experience with Pacesetter was good and bad. Good for the money and bad for staying away from my family so much in Motel Town. But, once I became aware of Pacestetter's greed, I made a decision to get out and I mean fast. It took one phone call to Gerry Anderson while sitting in my car to make up my mind one cold winter night and that was it. I check this site every once in a while for entertainment. I have encountered the same jerks making comments that I absolutely hated. Most of them were retreads from rehab and park bench winos, dope addicts, speed freaks and womanisers. Not my crowd, and if they didn't like me - well I don't care anyway. I have become successful in another field and am quite happy. Thanks for your input!

Their new company mycontractor.com is literally just right around the corner from were I live, it is a satelite office. It looks sad though, a whole bunch of lettering on the windows and one poor desk sitting in the middle of the room. Sad thing is how much business do you think will come out of that office. Working as a contractor in Omaha during the nineties, I knew several people who had problems with Pacesetter. They routinely convinced their customers, particularly the elderly, of the necessity for their products. One elderly couple only needed a minor siding repair on their well maintained home. Pacesetter convinced them to sign a purchase agreement for all new siding and windows at a preposterous price. They were "railroaded" into thinking they were in serious need when in fact, fifty bucks would have covered their repair bill. I have no respect for companies who prey on the elderly in the way Pacesetter did on a regular basis.

We had windows put in by PaceSetter around 1998. We have had nothing but trouble with the windows. They said they had never made replacement windows as large as ours. We had them come back out to the house the first winter, because of wind coming from around the windows. They said that they were not installed right and tried to fix them. We were having problems with mold and now the windows are falling apart. You would think that as much money as we spent that they would be willing to replace them. When we contacted them a few years ago they said that there wasn't anything they could do to fix the windows. They were only a few years old. Now it looks like we will be replacing the windows.

Subject: Pacetter's Sales Technique

I survived about 9 months as a salesman for Pacesetter in Norcross Georgia in the early 1980's. It was the ultimate sales machine, with a pretty heavy schedule, and a brutal technique for the sales pitch. It was supposed to last 4 hours, was strictly a "one-call close", and our sales manager wanted you to leave the home in only one of two possible ways: With a contract, or be thrown out of the home. Either one got you praise.

I remember four distinct "divisions" of the office - the Management, the Installation folks, the sales force, and the boiler room of telemarketers. The sales force was strongly discouraged from contact with any of the other three divisions.

The closing technique was commonly referred to as a "conditional close", in which the salesman, after his presentation of the product (all we had at the time were storm windows, replacement windows, and doors), would ask "Other than price, is there any reason you would not want these (windows, doors, etc)on your home?" If the customer said yes - we found out what the objection was and repitched that to overcome the objection. If the customer said "no", I'd go measure and count windows, figure a price, write it up and do a "silent close", by putting the contract in front of them and saying NOTHING, on the sales theory that whoever speaks first loses.

The price objection was always countered by first showing the savings of energy loss from old, bad windows, and how the new product was going to pay for itself there. If this yielded no sale, I was then on my last leg, and risking being "tossed out", I would remind them of the conditional close statement, and then ask "You told me that other than price, you wanted these windows, and I have showed you how can pay for them with energy savings dollars...were you not being honest with me when you said that?" Sometimes this "shame close" worked, other times I was asked to leave.

It was the most basic, brutal, and ruthless sales I have ever been involved in. I have since made a very successful career in sales, always reminding myself of what Pacesetter taught me NOT to do.

I'm so glad I found your website. I have been trying to contact Pacsetter (we have a lifetime guarantee, supposedly) on the products we purchased from them.

We have been surfing the web trying to locate them after their website and phone numbers have been discontinued. This hurts! We have a problem with our "custom made" storm door and now have nowhere to turn for a remedy.

So, where do we turn? I guess we are "up the creek without a paddle" according to what I have been reading on this site.

I worked as an installer, for the Pacesetter Corp over 12 years, in the Fresno Ca. office. I must say that for most of those 12 years I was not totally unhappy. There was a lot of pressure with the GOALS system and I feel that I could have made more money with out it. I did believe that the products were too expensive, but I tried to give each customer the best installation that I could. I know that there were companies whose products were both inferior and more expensive than the Pacesetter Products. I of course also worked long hours and traveled a lot, staying in motels many many nights each year.

It has only been since the company was sold to the Iskra group that the situation became unbearable. After reading the responces on this website, I realize that there are a lot of unhappy customers and former employees. My experience are simular to most of the others. The work load lessened and then the checks came later and later and finally not at all. The company owes me nearly 4000 dollars. After working for three weeks without pay I stopped installing. When I applied for unemployment, I was told that I was not intitled because the Pacesetter Corp. told the unemployment office that I quit my job. I just shake my head talking to the government people that do not seem to understand that if I am not getting paid for my work, I do not believe that I should keep working.

Here is the good part of the story. Since working for Pacesetter, working hard and giving my all for the company. I found that ex pacesetter employees are in demand at other window companies. After leaving Pacesetter I was contacted by three different window companies, looking for installers. Long time ex. Pacesetter installers, are well equiped, have good trucks, start early and work long hours, and are used to traveling. I now work for a quality company who sells a better product for a lot less money. There are no goals, and I get paid ontime including expenses.

I feel that the new owners of the Pacesetter Corp should spend a lot of time in prison for the way they have lied, cheated and stolen from thousands of customers and employees.

You can leave my name on this message and post my e-mail address also. I would like to hear about the new name of the company and would like to do everything that I can to see that the new company does not get a chance to cheat anyone else. Like I said I would like to see Iskra, Kluck, Madden, and Aloe in prison. That is where they deserve to be.

Subject: Need Pacesetter parts to repair broken locks & handles on doors

I purchased Pacesetter storm doors and windows about 25 or 30 years ago. I am a single 67-year-old lady, been in this house 35 years, and am preparing to sell the house and move away. But the Pacesetter front door inside handle broke off. And the back storm sliding door and screen door has a broken handle and lock. Home Depot has nothing even comparable to repair these handles and locks. Does anyone out there have any spare parts to repair Pacesetter doors?

2002 purchased four windows then added a door for my mobile home in Kingsley Michigan. I have been paying on the loan still and another two years going for that purchase. Warrantied my windows for 25 years and Door for 10 years. Now need repairs and found out from the michigan better business bureau, they are gone???? I am now paying on windows that I specifically bought for the warranty to find out there is none...
I want to know what to do about this.

I would love to know how they started mycontractor.com. I filed a claim against them in Bankruptcy court (at the recommendation of the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Office) and was added to their list of "creditors". I have now been invited to the "Meeting of the Creditors". You may post this on your site. It is scheduled for 9/6/06 at 1pm and the location is in Pittsburgh, PA at Liberty Center, 7th Floor, Room 725, 1001 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. I saw the bankruptcy documents and these guys filed chapter 7 (corporations usually file chapter 11)- the only reason they would do this (from my experience) is to protect their personal assets. I am a home-improvement salesman who once was trained by the Pacesetter Corporation in Des Moines, Iowa. This has been over 20 years ago. At that time they had an excellent training program. In fact, many of today's most successful salesmen in this industry have, at one time or another, been trained by Pacesetter.

After training, I was sent out on the road to rural farming communities in Iowa to run appointments set by Pacesetter's telemarketing division. The products I was selling were incredibly high quality, but their retail cost was unrealistic. Salesmen were expected to ask such a ridulous initial price for the products that most homeowners could not afford to buy them. Salesmen were authorized to take a series of discounts off the retail prices, but, every time the price dropped, so did the salesman's commissions. To sale the products at a reasonable price meant that the salesmen made such a small amount on the sale that it was not worth the gas and time to drive to the appointments.

Needless to say, my stint with Pacesetter was cut short.

Over the years I have worked for a variety of home improvement companies and, I must admit, most of them operate exactly the same as Pacesetter. The problems usually occur when the company puts an inexperienced salesman in the field without proper guidance and training. Miscommunication usually is the basis for most problems with homeowners (that and outright deceit in order to get the sale).

Unfortuntately, it's not always the homeowner who gets the shaft by unscrupulous home improvement companies; often the salesmen and/or the laborers get the shaft, too. I cannot even begin to add up the amount of commissions I have walked away from when leaving one company to work somewhere else. I would estimate the amount to be over $50K.

Sears is one of the biggest culprits for mark-ups. All you pay for is the name. You can buy the same products from another company for at least 30% less than if you purchased it from Sears. Other large companies, and probably small ones as well, trick homeowners into signing a contract by telling them that "this is only the finance paperwork to see if we can get you a loan", when, in fact it is a legal and binding contract for the work to be done to the home.
It's not until much later that some homeowners realize they have been duped and must follow-through on having work done to their home.

On behalf of all hardworking salesmen and the legimate companies they represent, I apologize for the nightmare you both went through. I'm happy to see that you turned this experience into something positive.

Hello, I stumbled across this web site and new I had to respond. I too worked for Pacesetter for a short time. I worked there as a salesman in 1990 and part of 1991. When I first worked ther I thought it was a nice professional work place. The following months revealed anything but the latter. I was previously for many years in the building industry as a builder so I was able to read between the lines. As I viewed certain aspects of pacesetter's business aspects I new it was a scam from start to finish. The company lied to me and in turn believing what they said caused me to lie to customers.

The lies
The sales pitch to customers that was taught to me in a two week training.

Step one: Entry into a house.
If customer would not let you in you were supposed to ask for water,bathroom, etc..NOTE(These were supposed to be all customers who set legitamite appointments) We were told never to take no for an answer

Step two: Warm up (qualify)
We were to sit for fifteen minutes and qualify the customers. How long they owned there home, their credit etc.. The reason was because, Pacesetter, we were told owned there own bank-Federal Diversified services. I later found out this was not entirely true. We were also told that each appointment we went to was already pre-qualified and pre approved for financing. We were never told that they would attach their home because of the financing. In fact we were told to tell cestomers in the next step that our financing was soled based on personal credit and that we were different than other companies who liened homes. Of course this is not true.

Step three: The company
We were given a sales pitch in which we were told to tell customers that we as a company owned everything. We owned our own bank, we owned our own trucks, and we ourselves, manufactured our own products: Windows, siding, etc. This of course was an extreme lie. One company manufactured the windows for pacesetter and another manufactured the siding. In fact the siding was manufactured by aluminum indristries and sold to pacesetter. I was also told to tell the customers that we as a company had and trained our own installers. We used no sub contractors. We were told that paceseter required 9 monthes of in depth training and testing of our installers. the reason for all of this was that pacesetter eliminated the middle man and therefore saved the customer a tremendous amount of money. This of course was absolutly false and a terreble lie. Their prices were priced absolutly high. In fact way over the norm in the industry. In short pacesetter was a conn. They conned every body from employes to their customers.

I worked in the Portland, Oregon office. I have never viewed such sleazy conduct in my life as I had when working at pacesetter. In fact their main target of customers were the elderly. The covered this by having a company policy that said we could not sell to anyone over 75 years of age. They said we cannot take advantage of the elderly. But in fact this was a smoke screen because proably 90 percent of the customers I was sent to see were 65 years or older. I wonder now how many elderly people pacesetter screwed through the attachments on their homes. It makes me sick that I was a part of that company.

I could go on and on about other unethecal practices that I witnessed at pacesetter but I won't I feel that every one gets the point.

I now operate my own construction company. I from time to time get a customer whom pacesetter delt with by selling them a wall of siding or one to a few windows. These were called partial sales. Most I have delt with have never herd from pacesetter again and are stuck with a partial job that was never finished. Usually when I am finished pricing out the entire job the people are astonished as to the comparison prices. I almost always can finish up three walls of siding or six to ten windows and be cheaper that the one wall of siding or the two windows that pacesetter had originally sold them. I do the job and I educate the people about pacesetter. I am very glad I stumbled upon this site. Hopefully I can help educate others so they will not be taken advantage of again by pacesetter or any other telemarketing home improvement company.
